Central Province of Papua New Guinea

In the Central Province of Papua New Guinea we are supporting the work of the Kyeema Foundation in the introduction of village chickens as an alternative protein source on overfished reefs. A major obstacle for the sustainability of conservation projects is compliance among coastal communities, especially if it means short-term reductions in fish catch. This unique village chickens project addresses this problem by introducing alternative protein sources to fish that runs in parallel with community-led coastal conservation and livelihood initiatives run by JWP’s regional partners, SELF, Corals 4 Conservation and Hiri Coral. Community-led conservation initiatives include reef and mangrove restoration activities, locally-managed marine protected areas and in the supplementation of livelihoods, such as the introduction of local chicken feed production and household garden farming activities.

The project works closely with the PNG Local Level Government Representative Councillors; Provincial DPI and Fisheries, as well as ensuring close coordination with the National Departments of Agriculture, Conservation and Environmental Protection Authority and National Fisheries Authority, to ensure the project continues to meet GoPNG objectives. JWP are a strategic and capacity building partner for the project, focusing on fundraising, stakeholder engagement and the establishment of working partnerships for project expansion.

Line Islands, Kiribati

On Kiritimati Island, Republic of Kiribati, JWP are supporting Corals 4 Conservation in the rehabilitation of the nearshore coral reefs after the 2015 coral bleaching event, where the Island lost over 90% of its nearshore living coral. The project has worked with local government officials and communities to establish a coral nursery, to help increase the reproduction of bleaching resistant coral species and speed up natural reef building processes. Through these humble efforts, the Line Islands has become a leading edge in the battle against permanent damage to one of the planet’s main life support systems. Additional resources and partnerships continue to be sought in order to support this vital work.

JWP is also working with Corals 4 Conservation in the organisation of workshops and facilitation meetings on the island to support local communities of Kiribati in the introduction of alternative livelihoods to help adapt and offer resilience to future environmental changes caused by climate change. These workshops have included the training of households in the harvesting and production of naturally occurring food sources, seaweed farming and seaweed products, poultry raising and in local plant-based poultry feed.

Vanuatu

Three coral nurseries were established, one in each of the three workshop sites.  Stone and cement ''fish houses'' were also constructed for use in areas of broken coral rubble- to give the corals a firm foundation to begin growing, while providing extra fish habitat.  Building fish houses is an excellent land-based activity for school children to contribute to the project.

The initial 'training of trainers' workshop took place over five days on Nguna-Pele Islands, and the following week, two of us focused on Pango, Efate island, while three of the trainees became trainers- taking their new knowledge to Southwest Bay, Malekula Island.
